About the Artist

A Modern Artist

Semi-Abstract, Modern Expressionist

Artist Bio (by NY curator, Deanna Liderman)

Kat Masella is a mixed-media artist whose work explores the emotional, spiritual, and transformative dimensions of the human experience. Through richly layered compositions, she creates evocative paintings that invite contemplation, wonder, and reflection. Her work balances improvisation with a deep understanding of art history and critical analysis, resulting in paintings that feel both immediate and timeless.

Originally trained as a computer scientist, Masella's artistic journey took a decisive turn following her wedding in the Vatican, when she and her husband embarked on a pilgrimage through Europe's great museums while tracing the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh. That experience ignited a lifelong dedication to art-making and visual inquiry. She later earned a Graduate Certificate in Visual Arts from Harvard University and continued her studies at the Art Students League of New York, New York Studio School, and through mentorships with acclaimed artists Katherine Chang Liu and Frank O'Cain.

Masella approaches painting as an act of discovery. Working without a predetermined plan, she responds intuitively to each mark, allowing the artwork to unfold organically. She describes the creative process as a moving meditation—a form of prayer rooted in presence, curiosity, and openness. Guided by questions rather than answers, she embraces uncertainty as a pathway to possibility, creating work that reflects both the complexity and beauty of a lived experience.

In 2013, Masella founded the Northeast Art Workshop Retreats, a respected educational program that brought internationally acclaimed artists together with students seeking rigorous artistic growth and experimentation. The retreat became known as a creative think tank where artists could deepen their practice within a supportive community. She later expanded its mission by launching tuition-free programs for seniors and continues to explore opportunities for community-based creative outreach.

Since 2016, Masella has exhibited extensively in galleries, museums, and juried exhibitions throughout New England, New York, and beyond. Her work has been featured in notable venues including the Art Students League of New York, the New York Public Library, the Harlem School of the Arts, the Rockport Art Association & Museum, the Moakley US Courthouse (juried by Hollis Taggart) and numerous solo exhibitions throughout Massachusetts. Recent honors include the 2026 Goetemann Residency Distinguished Artist Award (past recipients include world-renowned artist, Joan Snyder), the 2023 Judi Rotenberg Award of Excellence, and the 2021 Ann Fisk Award of Excellence in Innovation.

Her paintings are held in private and corporate collections, including Honeywell International and Bang & Olufsen.

Masella currently serves on the board of the New England Experimental Group and is an active member of the SoWa Artists Guild and juried member of the National Association of Women Artists and  Rockport Art Association & Museum.

At the heart of her practice is a belief in art's capacity to inspire goodness and invoke change. Through paintings that honors mindfulness and the resilience of the human spirit, Masella seeks to offer viewers moments of repose in a dystopia-filled world.
